Spoilers for “Andor” Episode VII’s “Announcement” will be available.
Since the beginning of the “Star Wars” series in 1977, Wullf Yularen has been a prominent character. As Grand Moff Tarkin and Admiral Motti discussed the power they actually possessed in their hands, the chief of the white-uniformed Imperial Security Bureau could be seen sitting at the boardroom table on the Death Star. He has been woven into the canon over time, both in the Legends and present timeline. He was a significant character in “Star Wars” before his name first appeared on a card in the “Star Wars: Customizable Card Game” from Decipher cards.
His presence is more than simply an Easter egg; it could have an impact on how “Andor” develops in the future.
Yularen and the Clone Wars
Yularen had several appearances in both the television series and the movie “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” Prior to the Clone Wars, he served as an officer in the Republic Navy and engaged the evil Separatist Admiral Trench in battle at the Battle of Malastare Narrows. He retired after participating in the intelligence game for a period, but Palpatine personally persuaded him to reenlist by offering him the rank of admiral during the Clone Wars. He distinguished himself there by working closely with Jedi General Anakin Skywalker. Yularen, on the other hand, was a capable leader and a force to be feared. Although his formal demeanour didn’t always mesh well with Anakin Skywalker’s carefree demeanour, they still made a formidable team.
When Ahsoka Tano was suspected of turning against the Republic, he joined the prosecution squad against her and was open about prioritising his professional goals over personal loyalty.
Thrawn and Star Wars Rebels
Yularen resigned his commission soon after the Empire was founded and resumed his intelligence duties as a colonel in the Imperial Security Bureau. He oversaw a division there that was tasked with suppressing dissent in the Imperial Senate. Senator Mon Mothma is now squarely in his sights as a result.
He had a fierce reputation as he advanced through the intelligence ranks. In Timothy Zahn’s “Thrawn” novels, Yularen had a key role in securing Grand Admiral Thrawn’s status and helping him advance politically so that he could forge important alliances. Together, they discovered a rebel conspiracy and put an assassin known only as Nightswan to death.
Additionally, ISB Agent Kallus was trained by Yularen at the Imperial Academy. For years, Kallus would pursue the Phoenix Squadron rebels before switching sides and providing them with intelligence. He became compromised and joined the Rebels, which undoubtedly caused his instructor great disappointment. He makes it a priority to find spies operating inside his ranks in “Star Wars Rebels,” and his inquiries could take him anywhere on “Andor.”
What this means
This opens up a few options now that such a significant Imperial officer is present. In particular, Yularen might be the group on the show that starts looking into Mon Mothma while Dedra concentrates on Cassian Andor and Luthen Rael. It would produce an intriguing dynamic that would greatly increase the tension in the programme. The other thing it might contain is Agent Kallus, who is a fan favourite. We are aware of three individuals who served as Fulcrum agents for the Rebellion: Agent Kallus, Cassian Andor, and Ashoka Tano. The only one we haven’t seen in real life is Kallus, and this appearance in “Andor” provides the ideal window of time.
In addition, it might be our first chance to see Thrawn in real life before his rumoured appearances on the upcoming “Ahsoka” show.
Whatever the show has in store for Yularen or anyone else is still a mystery, despite our guesswork.
Every Wednesday, Disney+ streams brand-new episodes of “Andor.”
